HEALTH AND SAFTEY IN HANDLING THEATRICAL FIREARMS
Analytical Research Paper | Florida State University | Honors in the Major | Spring 2025 - Present

After doing a review of literature on firearms in live theatrical performances, I discovered that safety was addressed as prevention against physical dangers. As a result, I noticed a substantial lack of accessible conversations and resources regarding the psychological risks that correlate with the presence of a gun in a theatrical production, specifically concerning feelings of discomfort and fear.
This could be due to the practices of the industry itself. There are many aspects of fight choreography that you cannot learn from books, but must learn in person through practice. I would argue that this very nature contributed to the lack of readily accessible information and as a result, led to a lack of written resources. This is why I personally make the assumption that there is information and knowledge being taught about mental health and guns that online resources do not feature. However, this is exactly the problem, because it is crucial to have accessible information for independent research and inquiry.
The goal of this research project is to answer the question: How can the theatre industry expand upon current firearm safety practices by having Fight Directors encourage discussions and produce content on the psychological well-being of practitioners and challenge the assumption that gun safety is solely a physical concern? With the answering of this question and addressing the gap in research, a shift in industry standard could be implemented with an increase in the creation of resources to educate practitioners on the psychological risks of handling firearms. In doing so, how would providing these resources benefit practitioners in the industry and offer a more comprehensive approach to safety? By answering these questions, I hope to begin shedding light on the issue that firearm safety is often assumed to be only about physical concerns and start important conversations within the industry on putting more emphasis on psychological safety.
